MEET ANN BATTRELL, MSDH, FADHA

Ann Battrell made history as the first registered dental hygienist, first female, and first former ADHA president to become the organization's CEO. Serving as ADHA’s President from 1996-1997, Battrell began her journey with the ADHA in 2000 as the manager of education, advancing to director of education in 2004. In 2009, the Board of Directors appointed her as executive director, and in 2016, she became the CEO. Throughout her tenure, Battrell dedicated herself to advancing the dental hygiene profession, expanding the scope of practice, empowering dental hygienists, addressing inequities, and improving access to care.

During Battrell’s leadership, ADHA achieved numerous milestones, including the launch of a new online education platform, increased recognition of the oral-systemic health connection, expanded dental hygiene curricula to meet the needs of diverse populations, and championed the expansion of practice scope for dental hygienists. Battrell was honored by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research/NIH for her significant contributions to the 2021 publication “Oral Health in America: Advances and Challenges.”

In honor of the visionary leadership of Ann Battrell we are proud to introduce two cutting-edge dental instruments that embody Ann’s spirit of innovation and commitment to excellence, PDT’s new quadrant graceys.

Ann was a trailblazer in her field and a passionate advocate for education and mentorship.

In recognition of her enduring contributions, we are establishing the

A. Battrell™ Quadrant Graceys

The A Battrell™ Quadrant Graceys introduce a new pairing system employing Gracey 15-18 and Gracey 16-17 instruments. This pairing allows for comprehensive treatment of all four surfaces within a quadrant using a single instrument, thereby enhancing efficiency and reducing instrument changes.

Use the Gracey 18 end to access the distal surface of molars. Utilize the Gracey 15 end for treating the mesial and depending on the quadrant buccal or lingual surfaces.

Use the Gracey 17 end to access the distal surface of molars. Utilize the Gracey 16 end for treating the mesial and depending on the quadrant buccal or lingual surfaces.

Testimonials

Ann Battrell was someone who had impact on the dental hygiene profession and oral health community in a variety of ways – she was an educator, a clinician, a leader, an advocate and friend to many within the dental industry.  Not many get to leave a legacy that is filled with the type of impact that Ann had, she was instrumental in advancing oral health initiatives that will have a long lasting effect on many and elevating the dental hygiene profession with her work.  This instrument in Ann’s namesake will serve as a reminder to many through telling of her story of the “power of one” and “influence” that each individual person can have.

Tammy Filipiak, RDH, MS, FADHA

Ann Battrell was my peer, my mentor and most importantly, my friend.  It is such an honor to work at PDT and to have the opportunity to help create a scholarship that will be a testament to her enduring legacy.

Lisa Baker, RDH, BS

Ann Battrell was one of the most tenacious and strong women I know but it was her love for her family, her appreciation for laughter, and her adventurous spirit that made being her friend so easy. She encouraged people to leave their comfort zones to help them be better leaders. Like this instrument, she was one of a kind.

Tami Grzesikowski, RDH, MEd

Ann’s impact on oral health and the dental hygiene profession are profound. The trajectory that Ann lead ADHA and the dental hygiene profession will have a lasting impact well into the future.  From the evolution of new workforce models, licensure portability and greater autonomy and scope of dental hygienists under her leadership at ADHA, the oral health community is better as a result of Ann’s leadership.  Her personal mentorship of me as a dental hygiene leader in the association, then later in my own professional journey, and most importantly as a friend have been beyond life changing for me. The lessons I’ve learned and continue to use on a daily basis are many and her impact on my journey and the many others she’s touched can’t be quantified.

When I was ADHA President in 2011/12. Ann and I traveled extensively promoting change in the profession. I got to witness firsthand how well respected she was which meant ADHA was respected.  She accomplished her legacy while being a single mom raising two wonderful children
